Fedora 17 and Clevo w110er (Mythlogic Chaos 1212)

I Bought a new Laptop!

Here are the pertinent specifications:
  • Mythlogic Chaos 1212 (Clevo w110er
  • Intel  i7-3612QM
  • 16GB RAM
  • Crucial 128 gb ssd (M4-CT128M4SSD2)
  • Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235
  • No OS  (well I put Fedora 17 on it)
I looked a several builders and settled on Mythlogic for these reasons:
  • They had what I wanted and other builders, at the time, didn't offer exactly what I wanted.
  • I watched some input from one or more of Mylogic peeps on the clevo/sager w110er lounge on notebokreview's forums and found their input courteous and helpful.
  • I contacted them view their website chat and again they were helpful
They weren't necessarily the lowest cost (on exact comparisons with others, when possible); but they weren't far off and I felt got a good vibe from them.

So far, my choice has been great!   If you are in the market for custom gaming style hardware, these guys are worth a look.

Here's How I Installed Fedora 17x64 on my Chaos 1212

  • Bought a $10 USB 8gb stick
  • Grabbed f17 rc4 dvd  (gnome spin).  I choose this because there was no way I was gonna wait a few more days for f17 final to test out my new hardware (got no OS hardware).
  • Used LiveUSB creator to make my self a bootable USB.
  • Stuck it in and booted.
  • Took a few tries, but finally figured out that in the first text menu, select the advanced/recover option and then use the generic/vesa graphic installer.
  • Few more tries later, I decided to NOT use wifi (I will revisit this topic soon) to complete the install and found an ethernet cable.
  • Let 'er rip!
Including the false starts, about 1.5 hours later, I had a freshly installed f17rc4 (x64) running on my new Chaos 1212 (what is a Chaos1212 anyway?).     While it was pretty easy to get a base install running there were still a few things not working or just not quite right.  More on that soon....

TL;DR:   don't use default graphical installer for f17, use generic/vesa one and find an ethernet cable as the wireless ain't gonna work*.

* well I have an intel 6235 advanced-n; other wireless may work out of box....

And here is how I fixed the 6235 wireless:
  • after doing the above and rebooting wireless no worky
  • futz around, no worky
  • google around,  I am alone on running f17 on a clevo w110er.
  • ah  lookie here cat /var/log/messages has a message 'iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode missing'
  • easy fix goto http://intellinuxwireless.org/ and grab  iwlwifi-6000g2b-ucode-18.168.6.1.tgz
  • un-tar-gz
  • cp iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode /lib/firmware
  • reboot
Here is a quick hardware compatibility table (wip, more soon):

Hardware f17x64 status Notes
i7-3612qm yep works
Intel Centrino 6235 N and BT Works Not out of box, read above
USB2 Works
USB3 I dunno
hibernate/sleep
works (after modeset fix)
fn-f4 key combo toggles sleep on/off
audio works out of box fn-f3, fn-f5, and fn-f6 all work ok
webcam works fn-f10 key does seem to do anything. Cheese works. camorama works.
Video/Graphics works, but... Go read here and here
Touchpad works out of box, but... I experience some frequent but random weirdness where the touchpad doesn't seem to keep up with my finger, mousing around. I haven't quite pin-pointed the problem
Card Reader no worky w/o tweaks Fixed now -- go here

  1. Hi, I have the zenbook, which uses the same wifi chip. My problem is worse, in my nm-applet, it says "unavailable", the log says

  2. first, thanks for this topic
    Usefull
I think that the solution is now pretty close, but i still not success to activate the device. when ctrl f12, bt turns on/off bet ctrl+f11 don't do anything, and device don't appear anywhere.
is there a commend to check wlan status?
may i switch it on without the keyboard shortcut?
    thanks by advance
